Project Repaint: Salamanders #2

Here is a work in progress of the Rhino I am currently working on.

The green was intentionally faded using a MIG filter. The filter I am currently using is "brown for dark yellow". Its basically just a tan filter. A filter is somewhat the reverse of a wash, and reduces the contrast of a model. The rust effect is MIG's enamel based brown wash. It if applied to the corners and low points of the model, and it flows all around the cracks and details.

To get the green color, I painted the area knarloc green to give a nice foundation. I then mixed orkhide Green with snot green in a 50/50 mix and added in some reaper flow improver to get the final tone. Flow improver is a good product which I highly recommend if you want a smooth finish. The model isn't done yet, since I will be adding more weathering effects and more painted detail, so stay tuned for more updates.

Also, don't forget about the giveaway I am running which can be found here

Fox's take on Eldar Jetbikes

Hey! My name is Darby but many people know me as Fox. I've been playing Warhammer 40k on and off since the early 90's. I've always had a passion for Eldar/Dark Eldar and when Mitch asked me to talk about them I couldn't resist.

What can I say, guardians moving 12 -18" with a 3+ save is priceless. Toss in a Farseer and a Warlock and you have one powerful unit. Some use a seer council but I'm trying to move away from that. The fluff for my Craftworld is that its a scouting group from Ulthwe, so they have limited resources and access to aspect and seers. With that said here is how usually set up my army.

I wont go with less then 8 bikes in a squad usually, the idea is with 2 being devoted to cannons you only have 6 bikes to soak up any wounds so numbers help and work. That's the base of my two troop units, I'll toss in a warlock with enhanced or embolden depending on my point restriction and a farseer with Fortune.

Two bike units supported by a warlock and farseer in each can be really tough to beat and they can hold their own against several opponents. Some weaknesses I've found are its cost and not being able to deal with AV14. Now that's the thing with Eldar players, we usually build our armies so each unit has a specific role and each unit supports the other. I use these units for popping small rhino, mid size battle tanks (the ones with av10 on the rear), multiple objective grabbing and supporting assault units. So this is my core and I add other units to help support, units like swooping hawks, vypers, dire avengers/guardians and several others.

Well there you go, that's just my take on Eldar jet bikes, again I prefer not using a seer council because I have had more luck with this combo so far. That and my council gets targeted and wiped out early. lol

In addition here are my bikes in action.

... Fox
Ah, my good friend Darby! Where would I be in 40k without him!My space Marines are his Kryptonite; but that's what happens when you play the same person regularly. You will expect allot of good things from him, including some Eldar how to!

Project Repaint: Salamanders #1

To be Unique or Not
Today I need some critique and comments on the following project I am doing. My goal is to refinish my vehicles for my Salamander Army. My old base color on the hull was chaos black, which was very difficult to add nice weathering, and looked very bland! So i have repainted all my tanks with "German Grey" which is a dark grey, similar to slate grey. The previous green color used on the armor plates and accents is more the 3rd edition seen in Index Astartes IV. Below are example pictures.

The first picture is the general paint scheme I am following for my marines, which is basically similar to dark angels green. This style of Dark Green is from Codex: Armageddon and Index Astartes, which were written during third edition. I make my color by painting knarloc green, and tinting it with Dark Green Ink. I use alot of metallics as well.

The Second pictures shows my current vehicles and there previous color scheme. The green is very close on how they used to look in person. The green is a similar tint as my marines.

For the third picture, this is a WIP shot of a rhino I am repainting. I am deciding if I want to keep the color "snot green" or go back to my older edition style green. (Keep in mind my 150+ marines, bikers and speeders are still painted the old green) I like my older edition scheme, but people mistake my army for dark angels allot. The side effect of going modern is my army will look like every other Salamanders in town since here is about 4+ other Salamander players using the "snot green" base. One is an old time Salamander player, Sallieman/Chris which is the original Salamander player in town.

So should I be unique in my army look, or being like everyone else! Please comment!

Product Review and Giveaway #2~

The Following just arrived today from West Wind Productions: RoadKill SWAT Team, and Secrets of the Third Reich US Armored Infantry. These can be found at http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/

Reviews!

The blister packs these arrived in, were a similar style to the all plastic packs you get electronics in. A little slash with the hobby knife got them out. The first thing I noticed with the Road Kill blister, is how the miniatures and game system are very similar to Necromunda. Since the SWAT team are armed with shotguns, they would make great Storm Troopers, or Orlock Gangers! The casting quality is above average, with little flash and mold lines needed to remove. Poses are good and are average dynamic wise. A definite recommend if your looking for Necromunda figures!

The second blister I am reviewing today is the Third Reich US Armored Infantry. I am very excited about these figures, as they are the first WW2 era figures I have ever received! There detail is what would be expected in there price range, and the poses are a little static. I do like these figures and will be using them for a weathering and painting article. So watch the Ottawa Gamer!

Giveaway Time!

Up for grabs today are the SWAT shotgun figures, and two not shown figures from West Wind Productions Dwarf Wars line. Like last time, the give away will be running for one week. To enter, post a comment and follow this blog to know if you win! On August 1st, 2009 I will use Random.Org to find a winner based on the posting order. Any questions, post in the comment section below.

Back to Work!

My need to Complete List:

10man Vanguard Squad I've been putting these guys off for too long! There made from a few limited release metal figures, including the veterans MK1 and MK2 box set. They will be armed with a thunderhammer, and 3 powerweapons, and will ride a Land Raider!

The Motor Pool is currently painted black with dark green accent. I found a wonderful shade of Dark Gray that I will be repainting them with. I ordered a set of brass etch, and will be doing allot of extra work to make them weathered looking I am undecided if I will add Dark Green accents and highlights. Any Ideas?

The Vehicles that will be painted/redone:
2 H.Bolter Razorbacks
2 Rhinos
1 FWLascannon Razorback
3 Predator Destructors
3 dreadnoughts including a FW one

I will be re basing my entire army. Its currently sanded with red oxide sand for a mars look. I found a better product to use and it is an artist acrylic gel with pumice in it. When dry it makes a great finish, so I will make a better mars look. Undecided if I should keep the sides black, or use a Dark Grey.

For bikers, I have a few to paint. I will be purchasing 6 used bikers tomorrow, which will fatten my biker squads from 6man with attack bike, to the full 8man with attack bike. That way I will be able to combat squad them if needed.

For my HQ's, I plan on painting them up to a better standard, and I have a few to go! Captain in terminator armor with lightning claws, jumppack chaplain, 2 Liberians in power armor, plastic captain, and a terminator Liberian. Expect WIP pictures when i start these!

For the misc lot, I have about 20 random Deamonhunter and inquisition models which I haven't started yet. They need alot of work!

And last but not least, I will have 2 landspeeder tempests and a tornado to paint!

I should be kept busy, for atleast 1 month!
Below is a picture of my workstation a work where I get painting done if time allows! Keep watching the blog to see who is the winner of the brush set on thursday!

Product Review, FREE giveaway and more!

Product Reviews, Free Prizes and Special Characters!
Hi, today's post will include a heavy amount of awesome for all you people who love Product Reviews, Free Giveaways and Special Characters! Yes, you read it right, there is prizes to be given out with this post! Keep reading to find out more!
Review - H.J. White Taklon Brushes

I received this set of synthetic nylon brushes in the mail today, which I got from miniwargaming.com/ . I am impressed with the shipping, since all the brushes were protected with bubble wrap, keeping them safe. It also only took a few days to arrive.
H.J. White Taklon is a white rayon taklon filament, man-made to perform like traditional Red Sable. Taklon has a good point, spring and a sharp edge, plus it is very affordably priced.

At first glace, there points are very sharp and the bristles are very firm, which is great for picking out details. Surprisingly, they are also priced really well for there quality. I estimate there durability to be mid level, sitting with sable-synthetic blend brushes.

Tonight, I used them to paint 2 Space marine characters, which will be featured after this review. The brushes performed good un-thinned with and thinned GamesWorkshop paint. It went on smooth, and cleaned off reasonably well with just a swish in water. When used with Leviathan purple wash, the #1 size brush didn't perform very well as it required multiple dips in the pot to complete the wash process.

I still prefer my Raphael Kolinsky brushes, but they are $35 each, so this alternative will be great on smaller projects!

Pros - Value, Easy to purchase, Best Synthetic Brush I've used
Cons - More suited for oil and acrylic based paints, Sable and Kolinsky are better choices for water based paints (GamesWorkshop, Reaper, etc)
All in all, I would give this brush set a solid 8.5 out of 10.

The Special Characters
What I have on display today is a White Consul Chapter master, with his escorting Liberian and captain. Any one of these characters will make minced meat out of some unlucky fool!

To the Prizes!

Today I have a sets of 6 brushes to be given away! Only used enough to make the above review! They are in perfect condition and waiting to be mailed to two lucky people!

White Consul Tactical Squad

Here is a Tactical Squad I finished tonight. Its armed with a lascannon and plasmagun. This is definitely a high powered shooting unit! The Sargent also carries a bolter. After this squad, all that needs to be completed in this commission is the 3 honor guard, and a handful of scouts to be touched up. I hope to be finished by this time tomorrow so I can lay the figures onto my gaming table so I can paint there squad numbers on!
Now onto the pictures! Pardon the poor pictures, I was at work.

White Consuls Command Squad

Here is the completed Command squad for the project I am working on. They are armed with a single flamer and three members have chainswords and boltpistols. Unfortunately an apothecary was not provided to paint for this commission so the squad is currently unusable in the field. Ignoring that, I made there squad marking a cross, to symbolise there veteran nature!

Here is a few WIP shots of the Sternguard unit I am working on tonight. I still need to paint one of the marines arm and chapter symbol, and need to do some touch ups. I am undecided as to which color to paint the missiles. I am thinking of white and red, or silver and blue. Ideas?

Army Builder V3.2

The main program I use to construct and make hypothetical lists for almost every game system I play is Army Builder. Its a wonderful program that allows you to compose and store all the lists you will ever need. The Current Version is 3.1 which does work great, but a new version is on the way. Some of the major updates I am looking for are moble friendly files, A user interface designed for a monitor bigger then 15", and PDF rosters. Below is the official update list.

New Features & Changes
Save rosters to PDF - Email PDF rosters to tournament organizers or friends, to print out exactly like normal Army Builder printed output.
Model list output - View the combined model list for your roster, including how many individual models of each type are required, and the equipment they need. Turn your roster into a "what-to-pack list" with a single click!
Mobile friendly output - Save your roster to a "mobile friendly" output format, for viewing on your iPhone or other mobile device. Touch a unit name and it expands, displaying all the unit details - touch it again to hide it. Unit options can also be displayed with a single touch.
Updated user interface - We've updated the user interface to take advantage of the larger monitors more prevalent today. Army Builder 3.2 is now optimized for viewing on a 1024x768 monitor, while gracefully scaling up and down to higher or lower resolutions as needed.
Do more work with fewer clicks - The "New Roster" form, the starting page for all new armies, has been overhauled to make it easier to configure your roster. Choose a race or a predefined points cost with a single click. Ruleset information to configure your roster is displayed right there on the form.
Better notification of updates - Army Builder 3.2 informs you of updates on the "Select Game System" screen, so you can be instantly informed about new data file updates.
Added flexibility for common tasks - The Options list now displays every option in a tree structure, allowing you access to more options with fewer clicks. Any categories you're not interested in can simply be collapsed and ignored.
More information at your fingertips - Army Builder 3.2 gives you more information about your choices in several ways:
Composition group info windows now display the minimum / maximum counts for each category.
In the options list, right-clicking on an invalid option explains why it's invalid.
Validation errors can now include more descriptive error messages.
New interface design - Many buttons and other areas of the interface have been redesigned for a more modern, cleaner look and feel.
New features for data file authors - Many common tasks for data file authors have been improved, reducing the workload for data file authors. Army Builder 3.2 also catches more common errors, resulting in quicker debugging time, and higher quality data files for the user.
All this and more - Many other minor improvements are included, including validation icons at the top of printed output, improved text summary and BBCode output, optimized HTML generation, and more!

Roster of Choice - 1500pts

Salamanders Rapid Strike Force!

Below is a Roster I have been using lately, and have worked out very well.
I am still undecided what is better on the captain, +2 Armor or +3 invul save. It does lack long range vehicle suppression, but I have enough fast meltas to close the lines fast enough. My old force was no bikers, with 2 tac squads and a sternguard unit with Liberian, which was hard to close the lines at times
